About us
”Friends of Chamber Music in All Saints’ Church” – for short KVAH, from the initial letters of its Swedish name – is an association of about 250 people who support the concerts given by pianist Bengt Forsberg and friends in a small, wooden church in the southern part of central Stockholm. Allhelgonakyrkan, to use its Swedish name, was built a little more than a hundred years ago and belongs to the Katarina parish, and our concerts are given as a collaboration between the parish and our association. During most of the year there are concerts every three or four weeks, and every August there is a four-day festival consisting of four or five concerts which focus on some specific theme, like women composers, Beethoven and his influence on later composers, or celebrating known and unknown composers born 50, 100 and 150 years ago.
In recent years some of our most frequent musicians have been violinists Cecilia Zilliacus and Tobias Ringborg, cellist Kati Raitinen, and singers Anne Sofie von Otter and Jakob Högström. Bengt can also be heard on many CDs together with these and others, and many such recordings were preceded by concerts at Allhelgonakyrkan. For some examples of music-making at the church, see KVAH Play.
KVAH’s concerts are unique in several ways. Thanks for Bengt’s network of musician friends and his appetite for neglected repertoire, we often offer works few have heard. There is often a mixture of different genres, like solos, duos and trios at the same programme. A normal audience is around 100 people, of which about half have elected to be members of KVAH. This means that the atmosphere is familiar, with many of Bengt’s favourite collaborators coming back several times a year. There are often verbal presentations of the music, and during the interval audience members and performers mix over coffee in the basement of the church.
KVAH’s board functions as the administrative office for our concerts, also producing programme leaflets, making coffee and acting as hosts during the concerts. Members receive frequent updates on our activities and invitations to occasional special events like mini-concerts and lectures.
