Every year our artistic director Bengt Forsberg convenes musician friends for four rich and varied concerts. This year’s focus is Schubert. Some of Sweden’s leading instrumentalists will perform a mix of works ranging from piano solos to his wonderful Octet. One extra-long concert on Saturday is inspired by the “Schubertiades”, where a larger number of performers got together around Schubert’s piano, and for this Bengt has also invited some of our leading singers.
For contrast and to celebrate Schubert’s Vienna we juxtapose Schubert’s music with two later composers active there, and one who came to visit Vienna and wrote music inspired by the city: Schönberg (his second string quartet), Schreker (Der Wind), and Schumann (Faschingsschwank aus Wien). Noting that all their names begin Sch… and that Strauss also is pronounced with the same sound, we could not resist including one of Schönberg’s reinstrumentations of a Viennese waltz: the grandest of them all, Kaiserwalzer.
Like always when Bengt and his friends come together (and when Schubert met his friends) we suspect there will be unforeseen extras. So come for all the concerts (evenings, Thursday through Saturday; and Sunday afternoon)! A festival pass gives visitors total access. Or book for individual concerts. Prices are 600 SEK for a pass and 200 SEK for an individual concert. Buy tickets at Ticketmaster or at the church 45 minutes before the concert. All concerts at Allhelgonakyrkan.
